UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev has revealed that he will possibly step into the octagon after the UFC 296 main event between Colby Covington and Leon Edwards to challenge the winner.
Makhachev told Match TV:
I think there's that chance. But the management has to be interested in the fight. We will talk to the UFC management before the tournament, but I wouldn't miss such a chance
Covington last fought in March 2022 against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272. That fight went the full distance and ended in Colby's favor by unanimous decision of the judges. He has 17 wins and three losses on his record.
Edwards last fought against Kamaru Usman in March of this year at UFC 286. In this confrontation, Leon won by majority decision. He has 21 wins and three losses on his record.
