Former UFC fighter Josh Thomson commented on Charles Oliveira's withdrawal from his bout against league lightweight champion Islam Makhachev due to a cut suffered during training.
Alex Volkanovski has agreed to replace Oliveira at the upcoming UFC 294 event on October 21 in Abu Dhabi.
On his Weighing In podcast, Thompson said:
He wasn't wearing headgear. Stupid, stupid. Look, headgear is not to protect you from getting knocked out, it's to protect you from getting cut. I don't understand.
Makhachev and Volkanovski's first fight took place this past February at UFC 284 in Australia. In this confrontation Islam won by unanimous decision of judges. He has 24 wins and one defeat. Alexander has 26 wins and two defeats under his belt.
Thomson last went out to fight against Patricky Freire in February 2017 at the Bellator 172 tournament. This fight, which was stopped in the second round, ended in a defeat for Josh. He has 22 wins and nine losses on his record.
