First time in UFC history, P4P leader stays on top despite loss

On February 14th, America's premier promotion, the UFC, released updated rankings following UFC 284, which took place on February 12th in Perth, Australia.

In the main event, Russian boxer Islam Makhachev defended his UFC lightweight title with a unanimous decision over P4P number one contender Alex Volkanovski, the featherweight champion.

Despite the loss to Makhachev, Volkanovski remained atop the updated pound-for-pound rankings. This has never happened in the history of the promotion. In the past, every P4P leader who suffered a loss lost his position.

Makhachev, 31, fought Brazilian Charles Oliveira at UFC 280 last October. The fight, which was stopped in the second round, ended in favor of Islam via choking submission. He has a record of 24 wins and one loss.

Volkanovski, 34, defeated Max Holloway by unanimous decision at UFC 276 in July. Alex, 34, has a record of 25 wins and two losses.
