In an exclusive interview with Telecomasia.net, Eric Albarracin, the coach of Paulo Costa, shared his thoughts on his fighter's career and offered insights into his upcoming match against Khamzat Chimaev.
"I don’t think much went wrong in Costa’s last fight. I believe it was all about Sean Strickland. It’s tough to prepare for Sean. It’s hard to deal with that style and pressure. You know, this was the first time Paulo had two fights within six to seven months. We had three training camps: one for the fight against Khamzat Chimaev, then for Robert Whittaker, and finally for Sean Strickland. Sean Strickland is very tough; he’s a former UFC champion.
"Paulo has fought many UFC champions. He has gone up against Johnny Hendricks, Robert Whittaker, Yoel Romero, and now Sean Strickland. When you are at the peak of success, if it’s not your day or something goes wrong, and the other guy has a good day, that can happen. But Paulo is still chasing the championship title, and I believe he will get it," said Albarracin.
Regarding the potential fight between Costa and Chimaev, Albarracin remarked:
Paulo needs to step into the octagon and fight. He needs to train not just in defending against wrestling but also in wrestling itself. Khamzat imposes heavy grappling. He’s unbeatable right now. Chimaev is a superstar in the UAE. I think he’s living there now, so he will have the home advantage. We will be fighting him on enemy ground, but I believe Paulo will be the one to hand Chimaev his first loss.
Brazilian Paulo Costa has achieved 14 wins and suffered 4 losses in his professional career. In June 2024, at UFC 302, he lost by split decision to Sean Strickland.
