Alexandr Shabliy, a finalist in the Bellator lightweight Grand Prix, shared his thoughts in an exclusive interview with Telecomasia.net regarding the upcoming fight between Khamzat Chimaev and Robert Whittaker at UFC 308.
Whittaker is the most challenging opponent for Chimaev for several reasons. First, he has great stamina. Second, he has a strong takedown defense. Third, he hits hard. He has enough strength to defend against Chimaev's wrestling attacks. This matchup could go similarly to Chimaev's fight with Kamaru Usman. Khamzat may take him down in the early rounds, but it will become difficult later on. Chimaev has a significant advantage with his ability to finish fights quickly, but if the fight goes on for a while, it can turn out to be hard for Khamzat.
“One downside for Whittaker is that he has just arrived and might still be acclimatizing. From what I understand, he arrived a couple of days ago, and on the seventh day, he may encounter adjustment issues. It will be interesting to see how Chimaev performs after a new training camp, and whether he has kept his former 'hunger.'
“Whittaker needs to apply pressure and fight aggressively because Chimaev hasn't faced such situations in his recent fights. If Whittaker can impose his style, he will strike and wrestle effectively. Thus, Robert must put the pressure on and stay close," Shabliy noted.
The fight between Khamzat Chimaev and Robert Whittaker is set to take place at UFC 308 in Abu Dhabi on October 26. Initially, the middleweights were scheduled to meet at a tournament in Saudi Arabia on June 22.
Chimaev has won all 13 bouts in his professional career, while Whittaker boasts 26 victories and seven losses.
