UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev may lose his title if he refuses to fight Ilia Topuria, as reported by ABC.
It has been noted that the promotion is attempting to save the lineup for UFC 317, which was initially meant to feature a matchup between middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis and Khamzat Chimaev. However, the fight has been canceled due to Du Plessis' injury.
As a result, the UFC plans to headline a title fight in the lightweight division, and Topuria has already begun training for the bout, announcing it on social media.
Makhachev last fought against Renato Moicano in January of this year at UFC 311. That fight, which was stopped in the first round, resulted in Makhachev winning by submission and successfully defending his championship belt. His record includes 27 wins and one loss.
Topuria last faced Max Holloway in October 2024 at UFC 308, winning that bout by knockout in the third round. His record stands at 16 wins and no losses.
