Etienne Capoue opened the scoring for Villarreal in the 32nd minute. Alexander Sorloth doubled the lead in the first half of the second half (55), and Yeremy Pino extended the lead on 86 minutes.
Marseille managed to avoid defeat with a goal from Jonathan Clauss in injury time.
In the first leg, Marseille defeated Villarreal 4-0, meaning that today's victory was not enough for the Spanish team to progress to the quarterfinals of the Europa League.
