According to information from The Financial Times, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy intends to transfer £2.3 billion from the sale of Chelsea to Ukraine. These funds have been frozen since the team’s sale.
This substantial amount has been held in a special fund for two years, but discussions regarding its intended use remain unresolved. The minister is reluctant to engage in lengthy legal disputes, although this option is also being considered.
UK authorities maintain that the funds should be directed directly to Ukraine to meet the country’s needs, while representatives of the fund suggest using them to support Ukrainian refugees.
In March 2022, the UK imposed sanctions on Roman Abramovich, the former owner of Chelsea, which resulted in the freezing of his assets amounting to £2.5 billion.
