Manchester United's head coach Erik ten Hag criticized England's coach Gareth Southgate after his team's victory over Serbia (1:0) in the first round of the group stage of the 2024 European Championship.
The Manchester United head coach said to Sport Bible:
Erik ten Hag
England were playing very passive. I actually saw them moving backwards, they kept Serbia coming at them. It's the vision of the manager (Southgate). England will take a 1-0 lead, then he [Southgate] decides to start gambling with making his team compact and relying on moments for the remaining minutes of the game.
In the second round, Gareth Southgate's team will play against Denmark, while Serbia will face Slovenia. Both matches will take place on June 20.
Following the game against Serbia, Southgate mentioned that England had to suffer a bit.
Midfielder Jude Bellingham was recognized as the best player after this encounter.
