The Spanish National Court’s prosecutor has filed an appeal regarding the sentence handed down to Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). The appeal requests a retrial with a different judge, as reported by Europa Press.
Deputy prosecutor Marta Durante is asking for the original trial to be declared invalid and for new hearings to consider previously dismissed evidence and issues.
To recall, the incident occurred on August 20, 2023, during the medal ceremony for the Spanish women's national team after their World Cup victory, when Rubiales kissed player Jennifer Hermoso.
In September, a criminal case was opened against him in the Spanish National Court, and FIFA suspended him from football activities for three years.
In late February 2025, the National Court of Spain fined Rubiales €10,800. Initially, the prosecutor was seeking a sentence of two and a half years in prison for him.
In other news, La Liga management had filed a complaint with the RFEF against Real Madrid due to the Madrid club's criticism of referees.
