Marca reports that Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales has issued an official statement of resignation over the recent scandal following the Women's World Cup final.
Rubiales' statement says:
I have faith in the truth and I will do everything in my power to prevail. My daughters, my family and the people who love me have suffered the effects of excessive persecution, as well as many falsehoods, but it is also true that on the street, more and more every day, the truth is prevailing.
Luis Rubiales has been president of RFEF since May 2018. On August 20, 2023, the Spanish women's national team defeated England in the World Cup final (1-0). At the award ceremony, Rubiales kissed national team captain Jenni Hermoso on the mouth without her consent, which caused public backlash and sparked a scandal.
The International Football Federation (FIFA) opened a disciplinary case against Rubiales, and a little later the head coach of the Spanish women's national team, Jorge Vilda, was fired from his position. The reason for the dismissal was supporting Rubiales.
