Portuguese new outlet A Bola reports that the country’s public prosecutor intends to seek a suspension of Benfica from participating in professional sports tournaments for six months to three years due to allegations of financial misconduct.
According to the source, there may also be a potential ban on certain former officials of Benfica from engaging in any sport-related activities.
After seven matches in the 2024/2025 Primeira Liga season, Benfica, under coach Bruno Lage, have accumulated 16 points and currently sit in third place in the table, with one match remaining. In the Champions League group stage, the Lisbon club has earned six points after two rounds, also placing third.
On August 8, it was revealed that Benfica leads all European clubs in profit from player transfers over the last decade, earning €743 million.
