The incident occurred in the second half after Messi, walking past Sanabria, said something to him. The Paraguayan responded by spitting in his opponent's direction.
The meeting was held at the Antonio Vespucio Liberti (Monumental) stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina and ended 1-0 in favor of the Argentines. Nicolas Otamendi scored the only goal of the game. Messi came on as a substitute in the 53rd minute.
After this victory, Argentina scored 9 points and continues to hold the first place in the standings, Paraguay is in eighth place with one point.
