The official website of English Premier League (EPL) club Newcastle United reported that the Magpies have ratified the punishment against their midfielder and the Italian national team Sandro Tonali for illegal betting.
On October 26, France Press reported that the 23-year-old midfielder has been disqualified for ten months due to betting on football matches during his time playing for AC Milan and will thus miss the 2024 European Championship. FIFA had already ratified Tonali's disqualification, but on October 27, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe revealed that the Italian would travel with the Magpies for their next EPL match against Wolverhampton, explaining that the club had not received documentation of the midfielder's ban.
The statement says:
On the evening of Friday, 27th October, Newcastle United received confirmation that FIFA has endorsed FIGC's sanction to be applied worldwide, meaning Sandro will be eligible to return to competitive football from Tuesday, 27th August 2024.
Note that Tonali agreed to cooperate with the investigation and agreed to undergo a course of treatment for his addiction. In the season-2023/2024 the Newcastle rookie played ten matches in the EPL and Champions League, scoring one goal.
