A fan has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for damaging a toilet door at Montpellier's home stadium during a match in the 26th round of the French Ligue 1 against Saint-Étienne. This was reported by RMC Sport.
The match, held on March 16, was interrupted in the 63rd minute with the score at 0-2 in favor of Saint-Étienne due to disturbances in the stadium. Montpellier ultras threw pyrotechnics onto the field, leading to a fire near one of the stands.
Referee François Letexier halted the game and took the players off the field. The match was ultimately not resumed, and the disciplinary committee of Ligue 1 confirmed a final score of 2-0. Montpellier estimated the damage from the disturbances to be about 19,000 euros. Moreover, one steward sustained an eye injury.
During the chaos, a 26-year-old man broke the toilet door and threw it toward a security staff member while making an offensive gesture. For the damage caused, the fan received a sentence of 14 months in prison, with 6 months suspended.
