Messi Misses Presidential Medal of Freedom Ceremony at the White House

Inter Miami and Argentina forward Lionel Messi missed the Presidential Medal of Freedom ceremony held on January 4 at the White House.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor in the United States, awarded since 1963 for contributions to national security, defense of national interests, peacekeeping activities, and cultural development.

U.S. President Joe Biden presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom to 19 recipients, including five-time NBA champion Magic Johnson.

It is worth noting that Lionel Messi informed the White House in advance that he would not be able to attend the ceremony due to other urgent commitments.

Leo, through the club, sent a letter to the White House saying that he is deeply honored and that it is a profound privilege to receive this recognition but that due to scheduling conflicts and prior commitments he was going to be unable to attend. He appreciated the gesture and noted that he hopes to have the opportunity to meet in the near future.

Since 2023, Lionel Messi has been playing for the American team Inter Miami, having signed a contract that runs until the end of December 2025. He has played 39 matches for the club, scoring 34 goals and providing 18 assists. His transfer value is estimated at 20 million euros according to Transfermarkt.

Additionally, the 37-year-old Argentine forward from Inter Miami has been named the best player of the past MLS season, as reported by the press service of the American league.
