According to Football Italia, Lazio president Claudio Lotito has expressed his disagreement with Serie A officials regarding the decision to reschedule their away game against Genoa in the 33rd round to April 23.
Lotito has requested a meeting with the Italian Football Federation administration. Reports indicate that Lazio were dissatisfied with the league's late notice about the match being rescheduled to Wednesday— the team had already returned to Rome on a charter flight. Now, they will have to fly back to Genoa on April 22 to play the next day.
Additionally, the Roman club is frustrated about the unnecessary travel and believes that this situation could have been avoided if Serie A had established a clear protocol in advance. Notably, Lazio are set to play a match against Parma on Saturday, April 26, in the 34th round.
Pope Francis, named Jorge Mario Bergoglio before his election, passed away on April 21 at the age of 89. In recent years, the head of the Catholic Church faced serious health issues, depending on mechanical ventilation from February to March 2025 due to bronchitis and respiratory failure.
Currently, Lazio are in seventh place in the Serie A standings with 56 points.
Previously, the press service of the Italian Football Championship announced that the matches postponed due to the Pope's passing will take place on April 23.
In related news, UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin expressed his condolences and highlighted the late Pope Francis's love for football.
