Maccabi Haifa suspended the highest paid player in the Israeli league, Dia Saba, from the team because of his wife's publication regarding the conflict between Israel and Palestine.
Saba's wife published a post on her social media accounts calling for an immediate end to the fighting in the Gaza Strip and urging Israelis and Palestinians to make peace. The Marca publication reports that the post drew the ire of Maccabi fans.
Saba has been suspended from the team and will miss the Europa League group stage match against Spanish side Villarreal on November 9 in Cyprus. The club has not yet made official statements on the matter.
Earlier it became known that Maccabi players and staff are forbidden to leave the hotel where the team is staying in Larnaca. After arriving in Cyprus, the team is under the protection of local and Israeli security forces.
The Formula 1 stage in Abu Dhabi may be canceled because of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
