Iranian head coach Carlos Queiroz criticized the behavior of the national team fans who booed the players during the 2022 World Cup match against England (2:6).
Meanwhile, the Iranian fans expressed their appreciation when the players of the national team didn't sing the national anthem before the match with England. By doing so, the players expressed solidarity with the protesters who condemned the Iranian government for the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. The girl died in police custody after being detained for improperly wearing a hijab.
You saw what happened today. Why did they [fans] come here and not cheer for us? It would have been much better if they had stayed home. We don't need them.
After the first round in Group B, Iran was in last place and England topped the group. The United States and Wales had no winner in the first match - 1-1.
