According to The New York Times, FIFA is exploring the possibility of increasing the number of teams in the 2030 World Cup, which will be hosted across three countries: Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.
The proposed plan includes expanding the tournament to 64 teams, so that the number of the teams matches that of the first World Cup, honoring the tournament’s 100th anniversary.
This suggestion was discussed during a FIFA council meeting and caught the interest of the organization's president, Gianni Infantino, who previously expanded the number of teams for the 2026 World Cup from 32 to 48.
Additionally, it is expected that Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will participate in the opening matches of the tournament to honor the centenary of the first World Cup.
