During the UEFA Euro 2024 round of 16 match between Turkey and Austria, fans threw an unknown object at the head of Austria's national team captain and Borussia Dortmund midfielder Marcel Sabitzer.
The incident occurred as the 30-year-old midfielder was preparing to take a corner kick. Sabitzer received timely medical attention.
The match, which took place on July 2nd in Leipzig, ended with a 2-1 victory for the Crescent Stars. Merih Demiral of Al-Ahli scored a brace (1st and 59th minutes). Demiral's first goal in the 57th second was the fastest in Euro knockout history. Austria's Michael Gregoritsch of SC Freiburg scored a consolation goal in the 66th minute.
Sabitzer started the match in the Austrian lineup and played the whole time.
