The Netherlands lost to Argentina in the quarterfinal match of the World Cup 2022. The meeting ended with the victory of the Latin American team in a penalty shootout (2-2, penalty shootout - 3-4). During the game there were several clashes between the players of both teams. After the departure of the Netherlands from the 2022 World Cup, head coach Louis van Gaal announced his resignation.
