France head coach Didier Deschamps has explained the decision to leave team captain Kylian Mbappe in reserve for the last Euro 2024 qualifying match against Greece.
The France national team drew 2-2 in the final game, finishing first in their group and losing points for the first time in qualifying.
RMC Sport quoted Deschamps as saying:
I had discussed this with Mbappé before the start of the match. I did everything possible to save the players who have games for clubs next weekend. The Champions League starts in a week. We do not want to put the players at risk of injury.
Earlier, Mbappe became one of the top three scorers in the history of the French national team with a hat-trick in the meeting against Gibraltar. The management of Real Madrid, despite the rumors, did not give up on buying Kylian Mbappe.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward came out in the match against the national team of Greece as a substitute in the second half of the game. Mbappe scored 46 goals in 75 matches for the national team.
