Bayer Leverkusen's head coach, XaBi Alonso, has equaled former Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola's record for the most consecutive matches without defeat in the German championship.
On April 6, in the 28th round of the German championship, Bayer Leverkusen defeated Union Berlin 1-0. This victory brought Alonso's team to 24 wins and four draws, matching the Bundesliga record.
Previously, only Guardiola's Bayern Munich in the 2013/2014 season went 28 rounds unbeaten at the start of the championship. The Munich team suffered their first defeat in the 29th round against Augsburg away with a score of 0-1.
To set a new record, Bayer Leverkusen must not lose to Werder Bremen in their next Bundesliga match on April 14. If Leverkusen win, they could clinch the German championship early.
At present, after 28 rounds, Bayer Leverkusen lead the championship with 76 points, holding a 16-point advantage over second-placed Bayern Munich.
Guardiola had previously praised Alonso for his work at the German club.
