Marca has reported that La Liga club Barcelona will take urgent measures to strengthen their goalkeeper position after first-choice goalie Marc-André ter Stegen suffered a severe injury.
On September 22, Barcelona triumphed over Villarreal with a score of 5-1 in a sixth-round match of the La Liga season. Ter Stegen, 32, sustained a right knee injury in the third minute of injury time during the first half and had to be carried off on a stretcher.
Medical examinations revealed that the goalkeeper had ruptured the patellar tendon in his right knee, and he has already undergone surgery. As a result of this injury, Ter Stegen will miss the entire 2024/2025 season.
On September 23, an emergency meeting was held between Barcelona's head coach Hansi-Dieter Flick and sporting director Deco to discuss the situation. Both are advocating for the recruitment of a new goalkeeper, as they are concerned that the current goalkeeping options will not be sufficient for Barcelona. Notably, it has been reported that former Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas, who is currently a free agent, could join the Catalan club.
