Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has called for action against Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who he claims provoked Atletico fans during the 1-1 draw in La Liga’s eighth round.
The coach was quoted as saying by Goal:
Diego Simeone
The people who threw those lighters, as also happened at the Bernabeu when Courtois was our player and he received a lighter on his head, are not behaving well. But we, the protagonists, probably don’t help either when we provoke people and people get angry. You can celebrate a goal, but you can’t celebrate it by looking at the stands, pointing at them and making faces at them, because then people get angry. It’s not justified.
The match was interrupted in the 70th minute because of fan behavior, with Atletico supporters throwing objects and lighters onto the field towards Courtois.
The scoring began in the 64th minute when Eder Militao found the net, assisted by Vinicius Junior. In the 68th minute, the match was halted by the referee due to the crowd's actions. In stoppage time, substitute Angel Correa equalized the score. Additionally, towards the end of the match, Atletico player Marcos Llorente received a straight red card.
