The current FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem is likely to remain the sole candidate in the upcoming election on December 12, 2025, according to The Race.
The reason is that a candidate must present a “presidential list” consisting of 10 people: the President of the Senate, the Deputy President for Automobile Mobility and Tourism, the Deputy President for Sport, and seven additional Vice Presidents. They must represent different regions: North and South America, Asia-Pacific, Africa, the Middle East and North Africa, as well as two people from Europe.
Currently, among the 29 candidates for the WMSC, there is only one representative from South America – Brazilian Fabiana Ecclestone, who has already supported Ben Sulayem. Two candidates from Africa have also backed the current president. No competitor can meet the regional composition requirements of the team because the candidates cannot be part of more than one presidential list.
As of October 8, 2025, in the Formula 1 standings, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri leads with 336 points, followed by his teammate Lando Norris with 314 points. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen ranks third with 273 points.
Ben Sulayem has held the FIA presidency since 2021.
