The World Boxing Association (WBA) released a statement criticizing the outcome of the fight between Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach.
WBA president Gilberto Mendoza for The Ring
I think it's not going to be no doubt about having a rematch on this. I think this supersedes the public perception of boxing involved here with a huge star for the sport and we need to send a strong message out there. It was a very controversial night.
Recall that the boxing match ended in a draw by the majority of judges (115-113 for Davis and 114-114 twice). In the ninth round, Davis went down to one knee, then returned to his corner and asked for a towel. Referee Steve Willis began the knockdown count, but then stopped it after Gervonta said something to him. Many athletes and experts believe that the referee made a mistake by not counting the knockdown, which cost Roach the victory.
