Atlas Says Referee Ruined Fight, Roach Should be Champion

Famous American coach Teddy Atlas shared his views on the outcome of the fight between Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach, which took place on the night of March 2 in Brooklyn, New York.

Listen I’m not saying it wasn’t a close fight, it was, but I think I’m gonna give it to Roach. I’d have to look at it again to be completely transparent, but I got to give it to Roach. Davis took a knee. He got hit with a jab before that, that constitutes technically as a knock down. The referee blew it. The referee blew that. He blew that. That’s a 10-8 round and he should be the champion right now.

Recall that the boxing match ended in a draw by the majority of judges (115-113 for Davis and 114-114 twice). In the ninth round, Davis went down to one knee, then returned to his corner and asked for a towel. Referee Steve Willis began the knockdown count, but then stopped it after Gervonta said something to him. Many athletes and experts believe that the referee made a mistake by not counting the knockdown, which cost Roach the victory.
