Al Ahly's star small forward, Meral Abdelgawad, says that the team is inspired by the performance of their countrymen at Alexandria Sporting Club last season, winning the Women's Basketball League Africa (WBLA), and is determined to achieve the same feat this year in Senegal.
Al Ahly qualified for the continental competition after defeating the defending champions of Zone Five, Kenya Ports Authority of Kenya, 1-4-63 in the semi-finals.
Speaking to Telecomasia.net after their huge win over KPA, Abdelgawad says they are motivated to go on and not only clinch the Zone Five title, but the Continental crown as well.
It is our big dream to go to Senegal and win because we know that we are capable of doing it. We have shown today how we performed against KPA and the kind of game we brought to the floor. I believe we have what it takes, and Alexandria really inspired us with their performance last season. They showed us that it is possible, and we will be there to fight for it.
Ahly have secured their place in the final against Rwanda's REG team, who beat compatriots APR in the other semi-final. Abdelgawad expects a challenging match-up against the Rwandan side, but has warned that their motivation for the title is at an all-time high.
