On a sweltering afternoon at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai Indians delivered a clinical all-round performance to hammer Lucknow Super Giants by 54 runs in Match 45 of IPL 2025, claiming their fifth consecutive win and rising to third on the points table.
Sent in to bat first by LSG captain Rishabh Pant, Mumbai Indians capitalised on a true batting surface. Ryan Rickelton led the charge with a scintillating 58 off 32 balls (6 fours, 4 sixes), while Suryakumar Yadav dazzled with a blistering 54 off 28 deliveries (4 fours, 4 sixes), propelling MI to a commanding 215/7 in 20 overs.
We've seen in many day games, as the sun goes down and the lights come on, the pitch becomes better. But I didn't think the pitch changed drastically. It was just some good batting. Rickelton really set the tone early, and then Surya did what Surya does. Our bowlers were put under pressure.
Despite a late fightback that saw Mumbai slip to 180/6 by the 18th over, Naman Dhir (25* off 11) and Corbin Bosch (20 off 10) added vital late runs to push MI past 200.
In reply, LSG’s chase never truly ignited. Jasprit Bumrah, in vintage form, tore through the top order with a devastating spell, finishing with 4/22, while Trent Boult complemented him superbly, taking 3/20.
LSG stumbled early, losing Aiden Markram (9) to Bumrah, before Will Jacks struck twice in an over to remove Nicholas Pooran (27) and Rishabh Pant (4), leaving them reeling at 64/3. Brief resistance from Mitchell Marsh (34) and Ayush Badoni (35) only delayed the inevitable, as Mumbai’s bowlers applied relentless pressure to bowl LSG out for 161.
Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya praised his team’s complete performance.
The momentum we had and the way everyone chipped in was fantastic. Even when we lost a few wickets, Bosch and Naman came in and chipped in. We knew when to kill the game — and we were awesome. Good teams are made when everyone contributes.
Pandya also stressed the need for continued focus in a tightly-contested season. "This competition is very tough and we can't afford to get carried away. We'll keep looking forward to playing good cricket and focus on the next game," he added.
Mumbai Indians now head to Jaipur for a May 1 clash against Rajasthan Royals, aiming to extend their winning streak.
