Veteran American welterweight Neil Magny will have his hands full when he combats streaking Brazilian Carlos Prates in the main event of UFC Fight Night 247 at the Apex this weekend. Neil Magny, who lost to Michael Morales last August, is the huge underdog against an opponent who debuted in the UFC early this year and is already headlining an event. Carlos Prates has already notched up three victories in 2024, with bonuses in all of them, and is primed for a fourth win in a breakout year.

Neil Magny
The 37-year-old has been alternating between wins and losses for some time. Holding down the number fifteen ranked place in the welterweight class, Neil Magny seems to be contemplating life after UFC. The veteran has paid his dues, and his resume reveals that Magny has the most wins in the division and the highest fight time, at 170 pounds. Having debuted in the UFC in 2013, “The Haitian Sensation” has seen it all, with over thirty fights in the promotion. In his two fights this year, Neil Magny rallied to defeat Mike Mallot in January before suffering a TKO against Michael Morales in August.

Sometimes I look back at how fast things have been happening for me, and I'm like: 'Is that even real.’ A year ago, I was signing with the UFC, and now I'm fighting a well-known veteran in my first main event, and I'm super excited about it. It's the chance every fighter looks for, and I will make the most out of it.
Carlos Morales
Brazil’s Carlos Prates is a knockout machine, with 75% of his victories coming by way of KO/TKO. Last year, the 31-year-old earned his UFC stripes when he finished his opponent with a straight left. Enter 2024, and “The Nightmare” delivered another straight left to make a winning debut against Trevin Giles. Further knockouts of Charles Radtke and Li Jingliang meant that the freshman picked up Performance of the Night bonuses in his first three UFC outings. Installed as a huge favorite against his toughest opponent so far, impressed observers have likened the Brazilian to countryman Anderson Silva. At 31, Prates is no spring chicke,n but his years of hard work have come good on the biggest stage.

Training for it is a little different because it's five rounds now, against a fighter who I'm pretty sure will try and grapple with me. I’m a jiu-jitsu black belt, and I like doing jiu-jitsu, but in MMA I prefer striking because I think it's the fastest way to end a fight. He's a tough guy, hard to knock out, but I see myself finishing him in the third or fourth round.
