ZTE said it has won a deal to build a coherent 100G optical transport network for the China Education and Research Network (CERNET).

The network expansion project, which is phase 3 of the CERNET, will begin this year. The goals are to expand the coverage and transmission capacity of the network and to improve its speed and security.

The network, with a total transmission distance of over 10,000 km, will cover 10 major cities across the nation - Beijing, Chongqing, Dalian, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Shanghai, Shenyang, Shenzhen, Wuhan and Xi’an.

Under the deal, ZTE will provide 100G solution and ZXONE 8000 series OTN products to build the backbone bearer network for the CERNET.

The 100G solution is capable of hybrid transmission of 100G and 10G services and supports a seamless upgrade from 10G to 100G, ZTE said in a statement released Thursday.
