The city of Taipei, having already covered itself with a Wi-Fi mesh network, is taking the next step of launching a VoIP-based voice service that will use dual-mode Wi-Fi/cellphones.
Ten companies are pushing the 'Taipei Easy Call' initiative, which is targeting 200,000 users by the end of this year. 'If this is successful, then the model could be copied in cities elsewhere in the world,' Daniel Wong of the Taipei Computer Association told AFP.
The initiative also involves switching schools and government offices from the PSTN to VoIP by the end of this month. Taipei mayor Ma Ying-jeou, says that the money the city saves from using the new system in schools will help provide better lunches for students, reports BBC News online.
