IRIN, a United Nations agency, reports that Iraqi refugees in Syria are increasingly being given food aid through SMS cards on their cellphones.
The $30 bi-monthly World Food Program vouchers are redeemable through ten shops in the Damascus area for 17 different food items.
Of the more than one million refugees in Syria, about 32,000 are on the program with many more slated to start.
The advantage of the electronic vouchers include allowing families to determine their own menu and letting them sell extra staples for fresh produce.
