Australia's Telstra and Ericsson have claimed to have conducted the first live demonstration of 450Mbps transmission over an LTE-A network.

The companies used carrier aggregation to combine one 20 MHz block of 1800-MHz spectrum with two 20 MHz carriers on the 2600-MHz band. LTE Category 9 compatible devices from Aeroflex were used for the trial.

The demonstration came five months after Telstra and Ericsson teamed up to test 300Mbps LTE-Advanced transmission.

Ericsson supplied the equipment for SK Telecom's rollout of the first commercial LTE-Advanced network in June last year.

Telstra group managing director Mike Wright said these technology demonstrations are an important precursor to preparing networks for future capacity demands.

“Take up of LTE-A enabled devices is growing and advanced technology tests like this are essential to our network development strategy to ensure we are ready and able to deliver the most reliable network speeds and experience to customers,” he said.

Huawei has also been trialling advanced carrier aggregation, and last month conducted a trial of 300 Mbps LTE-A Category 6.
