Telstra has promoted its group managing director of products to be its new chief financial officer. Bray succeeded Andrew Penn, who took over from David Thodey as chief executive on Friday, May 1.

Thodey announced his retirement in February and he will remain with Tesltra during a transition until August.

Bray, 53, joined Telstra in 2009 as head of corporate strategy before becoming head of mobiles the following year. In 2013 he was appointed as group MD of products, in charge of the A$15 billion business covering mobiles, cable, ADSL, PSTN, NBN and Wi-Fi.

“Warwick has decades of knowledge in and around telecommunications and technology and significant financial experience proven by his business results in Telstra and other companies,” Telstra new CEO Penn said.

“We are pleased to have appointed Warwick from within our executive ranks, highlighting the depth of talent within the business. He is well regarded in the industry and has a proven track record in leading and significantly growing multi-billion dollar businesses.”

Prior to joining Telstra, Bray had stints in investment banks including Taemas Bridge, Babcock and Brown and JP Morgan across Australia and UK, and telco advisory roles at McKinsey and Company spanning 10 years. He was also chairman of the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association from 2012 -2014.

Telstra has yet to decide the replacement for Bray and said its group managing director of consumer Karsten Wildberger will take over the role as an interim.
