Telkom Indonesia has contracted Alcatel-Lucent for two major optical network rollout projects.
The operator has engaged Alcatel-Lucent to build a 100G agile optical transport network in Kalimantan, Sulawesi and the greater Jakarta region, the companies announced. The network will support a total capacity of up to 8.8 Tbps
These areas generate around 50% of Telkom Indonesia's data traffic, Telkom Indonesia president director Arief Yahya said.
“The growing appetite for bandwidth hungry devices and applications is driving tremendous demand throughout our networks,” he said, noting that the fiber network should help it meet this demand.
Telkom has also selected the vendor to build a 3,000km 100G subsea cable network linking the islands of Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua.
The system will have an ultimate capacity of up to 16Tbps, and form part of Telkom's Indonesia’s Nusantara Super Highway terrestrial and subsea cable system.
The terrestrial links and inland deployment activities will be performed by Indonesia's PT Lintas.
The deal is a turnkey contract – Alcatel-Lucent will be providing cables, repeaters, branching units, a line terminal and a subsea cable management system. The vendor will also be responsible for project management, as well as system design and commissioning.
