Martin Mercer to lead Optus’ fixed-line unit
Optus has appointed Martin Mercer as managing director, strategy & fixed, to lead its fixed-line business.
Mercer is the former CEO of VividWireless, a Perth-based 4G wireless broadband service provider that Optus bought from Seven Group Holdings for A$230 million ($241.2 million) in February 2012.
Mercer’s appointment comes as Optus renews its focus on fixed-line business to tap the opportunities presented by the national broadband network in its latest restructuring.
“Fixed is at the heart of our business. Optus was established on the back of providing choice in fixed line telephony,” Mercer said.
“We’ve been advocates for structural change in telecommunications for over a decade, and now it’s happening we want to show Australians that we are committed to helping take advantage of the opportunities becoming available to them.”
Nearly 300 jobs were recently cut from Optus' marketing, IT, networks and sales departments, as a result of the company’s latest restructuring.
