Taiwan has set a target of becoming one of the two largest suppliers of chips for 5G smartphones, as well as the largest supplier of various categories of 5G devices.
The nation's Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) has set a series of 5G development goals for 2020, DigiTimesreported.
As well as the supplier targets, he MOEA aims to ensure that Taiwan-developed 5G standard essential patents make up at least 4% of the global patent pool. It is also aiming for a 50% share of small cell standard essential patents.
The government-sponsored Industrial Technology Research Institute has been working with local IT vendors and device makers to develop 5G technologies. In February, the MOEA also formed the Taiwan Association of Information and Communication Standards specifically for 5G development.
The Association was founded with members including Chunghwa Telecom, Asustek, Acer, MediaTek, Foxconn and networking device makers such as D-Link.
Its 5G working group has been collaborating with international stakeholders to promote 5G development, DigiTimes said.
At CommunicAsia 2015, it became clear that there remains disagreement over the future of 5G standards, including what the KPIs for the upcoming technology should be. Collaborative projects like the Taiwanese government's could help resolve these conflicts.
