The Sony Ericsson Elm phone has been named the most sustainable handset in the UK by mobile operator O2.

The cellco awarded the Elm 4.3 out of 5 for its green credentials, using a methodology developed in partnership with device manufacturers and sustainability NGO Forum for the Future.

The Elm, part of Sony Ericsson’s GreenHeart range, was ranked first among 65 devices from six manufacturers. Five of the top 10 mobile phones in the rating were Sony Ericsson devices.

O2 said its Eco rating system covers the business conduct of companies as well as the product components and lifecycle.

Under the product analysis its rates each device in aspects such as manufacturing impact, components, packaging and disposal impacts.

For the corporate rating, it surveyed manufacturers on their management systems, supply chains, climate change, energy practices and other topics.

O2 says its research shows sustainability influences the purchasing decisions of 44% of consumers.
