Skype has launched a beta version of its VoIP software for Symbian devices, in the next step in its efforts to carve out a place in the mobile sector.
Skype for Symbian beta already supports 17 different Nokia handset models, all of which are Symbian S60 3rd edition feature pack 1 and 2 devices, the company said.
It offers all the basic features of Skype for PCs, including free Skype-to-Skype calls, SkypeOut support, instant messaging and file sending and receiving. The app can connect via Wi-Fi or 3G.
Skype has this year launched versions of its app for Windows Mobile, the iPhone, and the Maemo-based Nokia N900.
Skype CEO Josh Silverman last month outlined to GigaOM's Om Malik the company's plans to become a ubiquitous communications platform.
Ensuring Skype is embedded in a greater number of devices, including mobile handsets and videophones, was a key part of the strategy, he said.
Skype for Symbian was first demonstrated in 2006, suggesting the app has been in development for a long time.
The full list of supported Nokia handsets: E71, E63, E66, N82, E51, N95, N95 8GB, N81, N81 8GB, E90, N96, N85, 5320, 6210 Navigator, 6210 Classic, N78 and N75.
