SK Telecom has signed a sponsorship contract with e-sports company Riot Games Korea to promote its new 5G brand 5GX.
Under the contract, SK Telecom will serve as the official sponsor of the League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK) team, with its 5GX logo to be displayed on online banners and promotional materials.
SK Telecom also plans to sign a contract giving it the rights to broadcast all League of Legends matches organized by Riot Games on its OTT video service oksuku.
As a first step, the company plans to live broadcast the LCK Spring Finals tomorrow by opening a live channel on the front page of the SKT 5GX section of oksuku. The channel will include virtual reality (VR) live streaming.
Upon signing the contract, SK Telecom plans to develop further VR and augmented reality (AR) content related to the partnership.
“Esports is one of the key areas where 5G can truly make a difference,” SK Telecom EVP and head of MNO Business Ryu Young-Sang said.
“SK Telecom will realize a new level of customer experience by combining its 5G-based immersive media technologies with LoL, one of the most popular games in the world.”
