(Korea Times via NewsEdge) South Korea is set to launch its first military communications satellite on Aug. 10 from a vessel in the South Pacific, according to the Defense Ministry.

The Mugunghwa 5 satellite, jointly funded by the Defense Ministry and KT Corp., will also become the country's fourth commercial satellite.

Alcatel of France has been building the Mugunghwa 5 satellite and its transmitter, while US-based Sea Launch will be responsible for lifting the satellite to an orbit of 36,000km on the day of its launch.

The ministry and KT will also sign an agreement on their joint management and control of the satellite.
