Reliance Communications has appointed a former Bharti Airtel executive as its new CEO, as it reported a 2.7% growth in net profit for the December quarter.

RCom yesterday announced that it has chosen Vinod Sawhny to lead the company. Sawhny previously worked with the Bharti Group for more than 10 years, in roles including CEO of Airtel Mobility.

The appointment comes weeks after RCom announced the appointment of former long-serving Pacnet chief Bill Barney as CEO of Reliance Globalcom.

RCom separately revealed it lifted its third quarter net profit by 2.7% to 1.08 billion rupees ($17.3 million), thanks in part to strong mobile data growth.

Revenue grew 1.9% to 54.03 billion rupees, with domestic revenue up 3.2% to 46.37 billion rupees. Indian voice revenue improved a modest 6.5% year-on-year to 34.17 billion rupees, with voice ARPU increasing to 96 rupees from 92.

Data traffic meanwhile surged 85.2%, and the company's total 3G customer base grew to 11.1 million.

By contrast, Reliance Globalcom's revenues dropped 8.3% over the same period to 10.9 billion rupees, with revenue from global operations down 4.4% to 11.39 billion rupees.
