Qualcomm said it has entered into separate license agreements with Gionee Communications Equipment and Shenzhen Sanmu Communication Technology, covering 3G subscriber units and module/modem cards, including PCB assemblies.
The agreement provides both Gionee and Sanmu a worldwide patent license to develop, manufacture and sell subscriber units and module/modem cards implementing the CDMA2000, WCDMA and/or TD-SCDMA standards.
The Shenzhen-based companies will settle payable royalties at Qualcomm\'s standard worldwide rates.
"As the world\'s largest market for mobile phones and other wireless devices, China has an opportunity to establish global leadership in handsets and equipment," said Derek Aberle, president of Qualcomm Technology Licensing.
"Each new Qualcomm licensee has the potential to further accelerate growth of the market by providing differentiated products and features," Aberle said. They "will now be well-positioned to support market demands with a full range of 3G handsets and modem cards."
Gionee vice president Gaoxian Zhang said the demand for 3G devices and the services they enable is growing rapidly in China and worldwide.
"Gionee\'s expansion into this market is a reflection of the company\'s commitment to redefining mobility for our customers through superior products and services," Zhang said.
A provider of mobile phone solutions, products and services, Gionee achieved the double license of manufacturing GSM and CDMA handsets in May, 2005.
Jason Zhang, president of Sanmu, said the company is committed to maintaining a spirit of innovation and to bringing a full range of wireless products to our customers.
Sanmu is a mobile handset and terminal solution provider in Hong Kong and owns R&D centers and a factory in Shenzhen.
