British Li-Fi technology company pureLiFi has revealed it has been working with Singapore's Infocomm and Media Development Authority (IMDA) to test the light-based Wi-Fi alternative technology.
The company is taking advantage of the IMDA's recent decision to remove some of the regulatory barriers to joint-industry Li-Fi trials, including waiving fees associated with use of Li-Fi spectrum in the 400-THz to 800-THz bands.
pureLiFi was launched in 2012 and has since released three iterations of its Li-Fi system, including LiFi-X which consists of the first Li-Fi dongle. The company demonstrated the first commercial Li-Fi system in 2014.
“This step by IMDA could signal the start of new paradigm in the way the world overcomes the bandwidth crunch,” pureLiFi CEO Alistair Banham said.
“LiFi is a technology that will create new markets and merge two huge Industries – Lighting and Communications. This will result not only in new far-reaching commercial opportunities but also enhance the way we live in this mobile and wireless world.”
Singapore state investment company Temasek invested in pureLiFi earlier this year as part of a reported £7 million Series B funding round.
Li-Fi promises significantly faster speeds than possible over Wi-Fi – up to 100 times – but is constrained by requiring line-of-site to the modem or router.
