Hong Kong pay TV operator now TV has deployed an application delivery controller (ADC) from F5 Networks to help intelligently manage and secure VOD traffic.

now TV is already using F5's BIG-IP products for traffic management and load balancing, and is adopting the controller technology to help further manage the availability and flow of streaming traffic.

The company will also use F5's ADC to help enhance the security of streaming applications, infrastructure and traffic.

“From a technology perspective, we wanted to consolidate our streaming infrastructure and be able to manage a large stream of traffic, whilst protecting subscribers from cyber threats,” said Keith Huang, the vice president of product management at now TV parent PCCW.

“The ability to create security controls integrated with now TV rule engine in run-time helps our IT to mitigate access issues and security threats in the streaming platform.”

The ADC platform has allowed now TV to improve its network scalability, business flexibility and access control, Huang said.

He added that selecting F5 as an ADC vendor allowed the company to sidestep the complexity involved in dealing with multiple vendors.
