High-speeds on the high seas yesterday, as Pacnet announced plans for a 100G subsea cable upgrade, and NEC claimed a 1Tbps superchannel breakthrough.
Pacnet plans to deploy a 100Gpbs optical mesh network with and integrated OTN switching using its wholly-owned subsea cable network EAC-C2C.
The upgrades, which are designed to meet explosive future capacity needs throughout Asia, are scheduled to begin in early 2013, Pacnet said.
The operator expects the deployment to create the foundation for Pacnet to offer customers a set of network services between its interconnected data centers throughout Asia-Pacific.
The new backbone, integrating subsea fiber infrastructure and terrestrial backhaul links, will support pure packet technology in the optical core, in addition to the Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (DWDM/SDH) technologies currently utilized by the existing core network.
“With the rapid intra-Asia digital content growth continuing to fuel soaring bandwidth demands in the region, this latest initiative is a significant step in strengthening our network services to handle the continued growth of Internet traffic,” Pacnet CTO Andy Lumsden said.
The EAC-C2C spans nearly 37,000km and has landing stations in Asian countries including Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines and China.
