SingTel's Australian subsidiary Optus switched on a TD-LTE network in three cities on Friday, to complement its existing FDD services.
The company's TD-LTE network, which it is calling 4G Plus, is now available in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney. With the launch, Optus has become the first Australian operator to offer dual-mode 4G.
Optus revealed it will progressively roll out the 2.3-GHz 4G Plus network in major metropolitan areas, to operate alongside its FD-LTE network on the 1800-MHz band.
The operator will offer compatible devices including the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the iPhone 5S and 5C.
Optus' announcement came days after Huawei and Japan's Softbank revealed they have set up the first LTE-Advanced trial network on the 3.5-GHz band.
The network achieved a max download speed of 770 Mbps and an average download speed of 500 Mbps during a recent demonstration in Tokyo, Huawei said.
SoftBank also demonstrated a 'five-carrier CA' technology for TD-LTE on the 3.5GHz band using a prototype system that can provide a blazing 1.2Gbps download speed over a Huawei ultra-wideband RRU.
The announcement did not give any mention of commercial deployment plans.
